Weekend at Shining Cliff 24 to 27/08/2018
Chris & Janet H. organised a weekend away at Shining Cliff independent Hostel near Ambergate in Derbyshire. Set in protected woodland and a long way from the road, sleeps 20. 14 members enjoyed a quiet stay, mostly self catering. Some group meals. The Hostel posed some maintenance problems during our stay but we managed and had a good time. On Saturday most walked S to Milton where we found a beer festival at the Hollybush Inn and caught the bus back . Sunday most went to Kedlestone Hall & Park NT. Monday some went to Bakewell market. Mark and Jan joined us for 2 evenings whilst staying in their Campervan, Pete N had a ride out to meet us on one of his classic motorbikes. Whilst walking around Kedlestone lake in heavy rain a tree fell down just after the group had walked under it !!!!!!!! SPOOKY and STRANGE.

Cary wrote :- You can guarantee a turnout of at least 3 people for a SWOG Sunday walk if the forecast has a named storm. Ernesto blew us about a bit and chucked a bit of rain, but we also had plenty of sunshine.

A main feature of the day were the sweet, plump blackberries growing alongside the “Yorkshire lavadas” (Jack’s naming) and lanes.
The main reason for the route was to finish the walk back into Marsden along Deer Hill Conduit: a high balcony above the Wessenden valley, but we tired of the wind and followed the lower Pennine Way route instead.
