Walk Longdendale 29/10/2017

In addition to the published program Graham B. led an extra walk around Longdendale. From the free car park near Padfield railway station we went NE along the Longdendale trail to Deepclough. Crossed Rhodeswood reservoir dam, crossed A628 then followed path to Lads Leap. NNW across Rakes Moss bog and heather to trig point 541M, lunch. Then NNW again to Chew reservoir, W to Chew Hurdles, SW over Wilderness, Ormes Moor, Boar Flat, Arnfield, SE  Tintwhistle, here we stopped for a drink at the Bulls Head pub. S over Bottoms Reservoir dam back to Padfield. 9 regular members plus 4 from meet up did 11 miles on a very clear sunny day tempered by a north wind on the moor tops.

Walk Chrome Hill 22/10/2017

Cary led a walk around Chrome Hill 10miles.

Cary wrote :- On 22nd October 2017, 6 of us faced the tail end of storm Brian on a walk from Earl Sterndale. Bypassing the intended ridges of Parkhouse Hill & Chrome Hill on the road, we braved wind & rain in our faces until hiding behind a wall for elevenses. After that  it was varying degrees of mud & misnavigation to Thirkelow & Brand Top. Revived by Harvey’s emergency rations (emergency now defined as walk leader leaving lunch in the car), perfect navigation was resumed to continue the muddiest walk since the last muddiest walk. Some blue sky put in an appearance at 3pm, along with some timid rainbows still battling Brian. “A hard walk” declared Harvey, “Ouch” said Tracey, “Thanks for the walk” said Jack. He’s such a gentleman, unlike Brian.

Talk USA by AMTRAK 11/10/2017

At Hazel Grove Civic Hall 20:00hrs. 11/10/2017. Chris and Janet H. gave a talk with computer photo projector on their recent trip to USA using the AMTRAK railways.

Walk Winter Hill 08/10/2017

Steve H. led a walk from Rivington old barn car park, up onto Rivington Pike where we took in the views and had elevenses. We then went to Pike cottage then E to Crooked Edge Hill then N on the access road to the aerials on top of Winter Hill. Then we went W over Noon Slack hill to the rough Belmont road here we had lunch. Then N across the B road at Hoorden Stoops, at Will Narr we turned W down to Yarwood reservoir and on the dam wall we had a coffee break. Then we went S to Rivington village where we could not get anyone into the locked stocks. S again under the Go Ape People we saw the folly of Liverpool Castle then N back to the cars. 14 of us and Chester the dog braved muddy slippy conditions. The morning was muggy, misty with a touch of drizzle now and then, the afternoon was warm andclear with some sun.

Pub Night Romiley Beer Fest 06/10/2017

In a change to the published Cinema night (changed due to film choices). Jack M. suggested at last minute a trip to Romiley German beer festival. This was in a marquee and Scout hut off green lane. All was good until the band struck up, they were too loud for us and we retreated to the Duke of York pub.

Walk Peover 05/10/2017

Joan H. led a Thursday walk around Peover.

Nigel E. wrote    Ten members of the group enjoyed a sunshine and showery day in the Cheshire countryside between the villages of Over Peover and Lower Peover. The walk route passed through the grounds of Peover Hall and visited the Tree of Imagination in Lower Peover before refreshments were taken in the Bells pub next to Lower Peover church. After lunch by the river (Peover Eye), the return route followed fields and quiet lanes back to the cars. The walk was led by Pete Hudson, ably deputising for Joan who was unable to attend. Walk Wycoller 01/10/2017

Jack M. led a walk starting at Wycoller country park.

Jack wrote:- This weeks walk took us to an area that was new to to the group, based on Wycoller near Coln.  We started at the Atom Panopticon where there were extensive views towards Pendal Hill. We then dropped down into Wycoller to view the remains of the hall and the 18th century crook barn now used as the visitors centre, though some people decided to partake of the excellent tea rooms instead.
Once we got everyone together again we passed over the thousand year old clapper bridge before ascending Boulsworth Hill. Our descent took us into Trawden where we had a brief pub stop.
Despite an appalling weather forecast, apart from drizzle in the last half hour, we managed to keep reasonably dry.
